Harbor Seals in the Surf

These rocks in Fisherman's Cove, Wells Maine, are a favorite spot for the Harbor Seals to sit and sun themselves. You might think that a wave like you see here is going to sweep that seal off its perch. Not so, the seals arch their backs, get slapped by the wave, and stay right on the rocks as if they were glued down.

There are about 5 rocks in this group which the seals favor and there are often 6 or 8 seals competing for a spot. Here we see a seal in the water on the left looking for his chance to hop up on a rock. Also see photos of one of these seals at sunrise.
